22 January 2018

Last week on the construction site, installation of the ion source components began in the Accelerator’s Front End Building (G01), where access is now restricted. The heavy steel waveguide support system is being installed in the Gallery Building (G02), and acoustic tests were performed throughout the building.

Load testing is underway for the base slab of the long-range Guide Hall (E02) to confirm its bearing capacity, and the erection of the superstructure for the adjacent instrument hall (E01) is advancing rapidly.

Two fire water pumps, one diesel and one electrical, have been installed in the Sprinkler Building (H10).

And in the Target Station area (D02), concrete work is now underway on the A2T area, where the Accelerator Tunnel will be extended another 30 metres from the beam dump area to the Monolith. The walls on this heavily shielded stretch of the tunnel will be four metres thick.

A large delegation from the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) visited the ESS site last week to further the technical collaboration between the two facilities, including J-PARC's director Naohito Saito and Toshiji Kanaya, director of J-PARC's spallation neutron source.
