Target

The temporary crane for the High Bay was successfully installed last week. Currently it runs over the Monolith and Utility areas, but once cladding and roof are in place for Active Cell High Bay, it can moved all the way across the High Bay - for example when lifting in the ESS Target Monolith vessel later this spring. The hoist and trolley are soon to be installed. Hatch lids are being cast on the platform next to the LAN area. In total, 36 lids for various openings in Target will be produced - with approximately half of them completed to date. Installation of hollow core slabs is now in progress for the first floor of lab building for Experimental Hall 2.

A cabin is being built for ESS workers in the Beamline Gallery, where shielding blocks for neutron guides are currently being put in place. Seven of these cabins will be built in various sizes and in different positions in the hall, with the aim of workers having a clean environment to plan and prepare once the installation works here ramp up.

Accelerator

Installation of the valve boxes for the 13 spokes cryomodules are ongoing in the tunnel. ADrawing of cable is ongoing in the ceiling cable ladders above the Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) and Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT).

ESS will get parallel access to the bunker area surrounding the Monolith next week, in order to start installing the 42 R6 brackets that are to be welded to embedded steel plates in the round walls around the monolith base plate. Work will start on erecting scaffolding from the monolith basement, in order to reach the tight space between the monolith and the circular concrete construction around it. The next steps will be to position the R6 pillars in the brackets, place a beam on top and then continue with steel frame erection for the bunker on both sides of the Monolith (Experimental Halls 1 & 2 side). Lifting will be performed with mobile cranes, and work will be closely coordinated with the target team and partners working in the area.

General

On the upper floor of the Central Utility Building, ESS ICS (Integrated Control Systems) are busy with installations of a server hall, with the purpose of storing data from the facility. The room is divided into three main sections: 1. for ICS processes in all the buildings on site; 2. for general IT storage; 3. for the raw data coming from the detectors inside the scientific instruments in the Experimental Halls. This data will also be transferred to the DMSC (Data Management & Software Centre) in Copenhagen, where data analysis will be performed. Commissioning of the systems (power, cooling, controls etc) will start next week. Rack population will start later in the spring.

Cladding, large concrete elements measuring approximately 3 x 3.5 metres, will shortly be erected along Circular Road. Kerb stones are being put in place along North Gallery Road.
