Target

Superstructure work was cut short last week due to extreme winds on Thursday. However, installation of the first roof trusses for the  Experimental Hall 2 was completed. High Bay roof works have continued towards the Active Cell, at the same time as sandwich panels are being installed for the façades.

Scaffolding is in place for the north sector of the Monolith R6 brackets, to be welded in place around the circular structure at the ground level of the Monolith. A lifting table, to be used to lift heavy equipment into the Monolith basement area, is being installed, and painting of the walls and ceiling is ongoing in the Technical Gallery.

Accelerator

Move of the first ESS modulator took place last week. The 12-tonne heavy modulator (the heaviest single component for the entire ESS Accelerator installation) was rolled down from the Test Stand 3 fenced area to its permanent place in the normal conduction section of the Gallery. This was followed by the very first klystron, when one of the red CPI klystrons was transported from the klystron storage area to its permanent position next to the modulator.

Hatches galore!

The Target Building is equipped with a LOT of hatches. These sealed apertures in the ceilings can be opened in order to lower heavy equipment from the high bay level to the various levels inside the building. They will also be used for maintenance tasks when components are being exchanged, for example to move casks of activated materials from the Monolith area to the Active Cells Process & Maintenance Cells. The hatch lids are currently under production just southwest of the Target area.
