Target

The remaining steel sections in the A2T (Accelerator to Tunnel) are being erected, and will soon be followed by roofing. The progress of the A2T superstructure will enable the mounting of the last roof trusses and steel for the northeast and southeast side of the two adjacent Experimental Halls. The "A2T ready for D01/D03 steel" milestone will be reached on 10 September, according to schedule.

In Experimental Hall 1, the last roof truss on the west side, towards the lab, is being put in place and will be followed by the steel roofing. Installation of sandwich panels is ongoing at the top of the wall, and will shortly be followed by window fittings. Work on the curved roof by the bunker area of Experimental Hall 1 will begin soon, meaning the ESS 'sombrero' is taking shape!

The bunker crane installation in Experimental Hall 2 is ongoing inside the weather-protected scaffolding tower. Consoles and runways are being welded, and moving parts, and the girder, will be delivered early October - meaning the crane will be operational in late October. Roof works continue, and the installation of in-roof ventilation pipes is ongoing.

Floor treatments up on the High Bay start next week, which will include grinding, epoxy and preparation of walkways. Next week we will start preparations for the arrival of the permanent high bay crane, which involve making an opening in the roof. The 115-tonne-capacity crane will be lifted in and assembled starting on 31 August, and tested and commissioned for the full High Bay in October. Glass façades on the bottom floor of the Target Entrance building have been mounted.

The Active Cell, at the back of the Target building installed behind thick heavy concrete walls, recently reached an important milestone, as the stainless steel cladding for ceilings, walls and floors in both the Process and Maintenance cells were completed. Approximately 4 km of welding was required to fix the steel plates!

Accelerator

Erection of the steel structures connecting to part 1 of the Beam Line Gallery will be ongoing throughout September and October. By late September, the temporary wall to the area will be removed at the top to connect the steel to the existing structure. Once work on the steel, parapet, sandwich panels and roofing membrane is completed, the two parts of the Beam Line Gallery will be joined into one - due to take place in January 2021.

General

Roof works for the Waste Treatment Facility are substantially completed, including ventilation hoods. Metal bars for mounting the metal cladding façades are being installed, and lightning protection will be added in September. When all façades are completed in October, a 25m-high stack will be mounted. Door frames are in place, and installation of steel doors and a large gate for the front of the building is ongoing. Gypsum walls are on their way up in the office and labs area, as well as in HVAC and processing rooms, which will be followed by painting, and epoxy treatment of floors will take place in September. Electrical installations are ongoing, and will be followed by fire alarms, sprinkler, ventilation and piping/cabling, during the autumn.

Hollow core slabs are being installed for top level 130 of the Transport Hall entrance area. Work on the cantilever roof in this area will begin in late September. The overhead crane inside the Transport Hall entrance area is currently subject to test and commissioning, and next month ESS will be given access there to start their mock-up activities.
