Accelerator

Modulators: At present, there are three of the ESS modulators in place in the Normal Conducting Gallery, two inside Test Stand 3 whereof one is subject to testing to be placed in the Medium Beta section and the other one is being reconditioned, and seven medium beta modulators are stored at our RATS warehouse. The five remaining high beta modulators are in the procurement phase.

Test and commissioning of the MAS/PAS: Installation of the access system to the G01 Linac is substantially completed. The Personnel and Material Access System (PAS & MAS) have been equipped with laser motion detectors and cameras that will prohibit unauthorised access once commissioning of the Normal Conducting Linac starts.

Cabling: Cable pulling activities continue on both sides of the stubs (Linac and Gallery), cable raceways and ladders are being mounted and the racks are subject to fit-outs. In the Gallery cable pulling for the Modulators is ongoing in the Medium and High Beta sections.

Cryomodules: As previously reported, the first cryomodule for the medium beta section of the Accelerator has arrived in the Klystron Gallery and is currently subject to initial testing in the preparation area outside the Test Stand 2 bunker. Recently, the very first serial produced cryomodule for the spokes section has arrived in our partner lab, FREIA at Uppsala University, from in-kind partner CNRS in France. When fully installed, the ESS Accelerator will have 13 spokes cryomodules, nine medium beta elliptical cryomodules and 21 high beta cryomodules (to be installed after the first beam on Target).

Polish contractor Kriosystem will be back on site next week to perform additional welding on the elliptical cryo distribution system piping system and later also exchange the piping in the spokes section.

DTL progress: Inside the DTL workshop, a team from In-Kind partner INFN, Italy, continues to make progress, with the completion of the leak tests and installation of a bead pulling system (for measurements of electrical/RF fields).

The installation of the DTL water skid on the ground floor of the Front End Building is planned to start in coming weeks.

Target

Three days of Site Acceptance Tests for the Target high bay crane were successfully completed and the L3 crane designed and dimensioned for special, heavy loads of up to 115 tonnes is now operational and training was provided for ESS staff that will be operating it,the lift the Monolith Vessel. All teams involved in the delivery of the vessel to site were gearing up to receive the component, shipped in two parts from Spain, managed by ESS Bilbao.

E-Halls 1 & 2

Superstructure works in the east end of Experimental Halls 1 & 2 (D01 and D03) are in progress. In D01 sandwich panels for the front façade are being mounted, and on the D03 side the last roof trusses are lifted in place. The cantilever roof for the west gable of D03 will commence after the delivery of the Monolith Vessel.

NSS Shielding Bunker: The assembly of the steel structure for the NSS bunker is in progress inside Experimental Hall 2 (D03). In November the first concrete shielding blocks for the bunker will arrive to D03, to be mounted with the overhead crane, and later the bunker crane.

Beamline Gallery: TRP roofing was completed for the Beamline Gallery (E02 part 2) this week – next up is the installation of sandwich panels.

Roof for the BIFROST cave: This week, installation of the roof panels for the BIFROST cave inside Experimental Hall 3 was performed. This is the last structural element to complete the cave. The beam stop block has arrived and will be put in place inside the cave.
