Skanska hands over Campus for ESS to start preparations to move in

An important milestone was reached this last week, as construction partner, Skanska, handed over the completed Campus buildings for ESS to commence preparations to move in.

The ESS Campus consists of three  buildings: office, warehouse & laboratories and an entrance building. While the move kicks off with the furniture and equipment, the most important part – the ESS people – will follow in March. An official inauguration is planned for June 2021.

Neutron shielding bunker

Installation of the west wall for the neutron shielding bunker in Experimental Hall 2 is ongoing. Shortly, the ESS Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) division will proceed with the steel frame closer to the Monolith footprint, and also start on the other side of Target, inside Experimental Hall 1, with baseplates and steel structure for the south sector. Shielding block installation for the south wall is projected to start in March.

ESS sombrero

The steel structure for the cantilever roof along the south façade of Experimental hall 1 is being equipped with aluminium panels, finishing the look and feel of the ESS sombrero. Façade cladding is ongoing underneath.

Target Entrance

Internal finishes continue in the office space and technical areas inside the Target Entrance building. This week the carpet for the ESS Main Control Room on the first floor was fitted. ESS Integrated Control Systems (ICS) division will get access in February, to start in-ceiling installations.

Waste Treatment Facility

With steel profiles for the facades substantially completed, some epoxy floor treatment remains inside the Waste Treatment Facility building, where installation works are currently ongoing. This includes fire alarm, electrical, ventilation and sprinkler. Test and commissioning of completed sub-systems will commence before the end of January. A temporary building permit is in process for four office cabins to be placed outside and connected to the building via a sluice. Cabins will arrive late-March and before that our construction partner’s civil works team will do the preparatory ground works, including water and sewage.
