Experimental Hall 1

The bunker footprint surrounding the Target Monolith inside Experimental Hall 1 is getting ready for ESS Neutron Scattering Systems Division to start marking and drilling for 85 base plates in this area. Installation of bunker steel and blue concrete blocks is scheduled to start in March, first in the south sector, followed by the east sector.

Installation of the D01 overhead crane is ongoing. The Site Acceptance Test (SAT) is planned for next week.

Instrument access for NSS will be granted in June (ESTIA – starting with the connection to the bunker wall, with the instrument cave following later on) and in August (ODIN, DREAM).

Experimental Hall 2

The west sector bunker walls are substantially completed. The bunker crane is subject to SAT in the coming week, after which works with the north sector bunker can start.

The sandwich panels on the north façade of Experimental Hall 2 are now completely installed, and the area ready for the start of the curved roof.

Curved, cantilever roof is progressing on the east gable wall of the building, above the adjacent lab building.

Target High Bay

Painting of the wall between the Target Monolith and the Accelerator to Target (A2T) building is complete, and internal movement joints are ongoing.

Electrical installations, as well as ventilation ducting, is in progress up on the Target High Bay.

Transport Hall

The large entrance gate to the Target Transport Hall is planned for installation next week. Inside the hall, ESS has continued the works with the Mockup and Test Stand (MUTS), where testing of remote handling of casks will be performed.

Target Entrance building

In the future ESS Main Control Room and surrounding areas painting of ceiling supports is ongoing. Tiling on all levels is starting.

On the outside of the building, metal cladding is in progress on the south façade, to be followed by external movement joints.

Accelerator Tunnel shielding

Tunnel shielding installations are ongoing. The Front End Penetration Shielding, covering the four openings behind the Ion Source area for cabling and other connections, is ongoing with metal bricks in place for the four windows. This will be followed by concrete elements forming a shielding wall and a gate preventing unauthorized access to the area.

Drop Hatch shielding has also started.

Linac Warm Units

Stands for Linac Warm Units (LWU) have been placed in their permanent positions inside the superconducting part of the Accelerator tunnel. The LWUs will be sitting in-between the medium beta and high beta cryomodules. They contain a beam tube for protons, set under vacuum, and quadrupole magnets to steer and shape the proton beam. It will also house beam diagnostic instruments that constantly measure the beam parameters.

LWUs are part of the in-kind contribution from the STFC Daresbury Laboratory in the UK.

Accelerator infrastructure

Conditioning and testing of the modulator and klystrons continue in the Normal Conducting Gallery.

A klystron has been moved to its permanent position in cell 160, where waveguide installation is also ongoing.

Cable pulling, cable raceways and electrical installations are ongoing, in the Gallery and in the tunnel.
