Accelerator

RFQ conditioning is in progress in the Normal Conducting Linac (NCL). Low power radio-frequency is sent to the RFQ cavities, with a view to gradually increase the power to 3 MW.

Warm conditioning (RF power to cavities) of the first serial-produced elliptical medium beta cryomodule inside a test stand bunker started this week. Cooldown is expected to follow shortly.

Water manifolds have been mounted on the first Drift Tube Linac (DTL) tank, an installation readiness review held, and DTL1 will be installed in the tunnel in August – after RFQ conditioning but before beam commissioning.

The fourth serial-produced and fully tested medium beta modulator is now in place in the RF cell, and will be connected to high voltage.

Installation of two RF power stations continues in spoke cell 120.

Target

Adjustment works are now completed for the west end of the cantilever roof structure above the Target Entrance building, and panels of aluminum lamellae are mounted here. Cladding of the cantilever roof on the north side above the Beamline Gallery roof is almost completed. Façade cladding for the remaining parts of the Target Entrance building is ongoing. Insulation boards are mounted, to be followed by metal cladding.

Inside the Target building, three concrete shielding doors for the triangular rooms (separating the Utility block from the Monolith) are in place with the door opening mechanism installed and maneuverable for the door on the ground floor level.

Experimental Halls & Labs

Preparations to install a Selene neutron guide for the instrument ESTIA (Swiss in-kind contribution) is under way in Experimental Hall 1. As it will be installed partly inside the east sector bunker, brackets and a support structure will be fitted along with the first few blocks for the bunker wall. Once the Selene guide is in place, it will be protected with plastic cover, and mounting of the concrete blocks for the east sector wall will continue.

The control hutch is in place next to the instrument cave for NMX, and internal finishes are now ongoing on the two floors of the building. A spiral staircase has been fitted to reach the roof level of the hutch.

In lab building D04, which will house the sample preparation area for instruments in Experimental Hall 2, all floor treatments are completed and the staircases have been painted. Terrazzo flooring of the stairs will be done shortly. Steel doors are in place, locks and fittings will follow. Tiling and appliances for the bathrooms are substantially completed, a kitchenette has been installed and glass partition walls are in place. ESS have placed 12 fume hoods in the building, six on each floor. Construction partner Skanska will now finish the in-ceiling installations and close with ceiling tiles.
