Accelerator

Normal Conducting Linac

Installation of the first Drift Tube Linac tank continues in the Normal Conducting Linac (NCL). The Faraday Cup and associated shielding blocks have been delivered to the tunnel and installation is under way.

Reinstallation of the adjusted temporary shielding wall separating the NCL from the rest of the tunnel, is about to start and the wall will be closed again by the end of September. This will enable continued installations in the superconducting linac whilst beam commissioning starts in the NCL.

Preparations and local tests for beam commissioning are ongoing in already installed components: the ion source, low energy beam transport (LEBT), radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) and medium energy beam transport (MEBT).

A safety readiness review was held last week.

Klystron Gallery

RF power tests continue for the Drift Tube Linac waveguide system, klystrons and modulators in the normal conducting gallery.

Low power tests of klystrons in the first medium beta RF ell are almost complete. A team of engineers and technicians from ESS Polish in-kind partner IFJ PAN conducts these tests, in close collaboration with ESS.

Further up in the gallery, in the medium and high beta sections, cable pulling and terminations, as well as rack fit-outs continue.

Cryomodules in Test Stand 2

Cold operation of the first medium beta cryomodule inside the test stand 2 bunker continues. The next serial-produced cryomodule is being prepared in the inspection area and the prototype cryomodule will be subject to transport tests to the accelerator tunnel shortly.

Target

Active Cells

Installation of floor valves continue.

The lower intrabay door is in place between the process and maintenance cells, and has been subject to power tests. Installation of the upper intrabay folding door follows.

Target Utility

Installations continue in the Utility block adjacent to the Monolith building. Cooling tanks have been delivered and placed on concrete foundations.

Target Monolith

The first boxes of port tubes, to be welded to the Monolith vacuum vessel, have arrived on site and are currently stored up on the high bay. Lifting tests will be conducted over the next couple of weeks, and welding works are planned to start in October.

Target roof and facades

The mounting of panels for the curved roof continue in the west end of the Target building, above the Target Entrance to D08 lab area as well as the roof over Transport Hall.

Façade cladding is still ongoing for the remaining parts of the A2T front, with a view to be completed by the end of September.

Experimental Halls & Labs

ESS has started the installation of lower shielding blocks for beamlines W3 and W4 (CSPEC and BIFROST) inside Experimental Hall 2.

The bunker crane runway in Experimental Hall 2 is currently subject to reinforcement works. Scaffolding is in place on the other side of the Monolith inside Experimental Hall 1 for the same works to follow there.

All NSS fume hoods for labs D04 and D08 are fully installed. Skanska is now in progress with final internal touch up works.

Part two of the Beamline Gallery is subject to sectional handover to ESS on Monday 13 September.

Central Utility Building

This week four heat exchangers were delivered to the Central Utility Building H01. These machines will be used for the surplus heat from ESS processes and be able to reheat water and recycle heat via a direct connection to the district heating network. Three more heat exchangers, weighing 4.5 tonnes each, will be delivered in the next couple of weeks. Connection to existing piping is next.

This installation is a key part of the surplus heat recycling system installed in the Central Utility Building, which will be operational from next summer. The system is provided and operated by ESS commercial partner E.ON.
