Beam on!

Beam commissioning is now ongoing – beam has successfully been extracted from the ion source to the first faraday cup.

This phase of beam commissioning, where the goal is to extract and send beam through the Low Energy Beam Transport, the Radio-Frequency Quadrupole and finally the Medium Energy Beam Transport, will go on for some time. It will test the functionality of all systems installed working together in harmony.

Cryomodule testing

The medium beta cryomodule inside the test stand bunker has been subject to warm up, in preparation for the exchange of a vacuum gauge next week. The full test cycle for this cryomodule will then be completed, before swapping to the next cryomodule in line.

Target

Target cantilever roof

The ESS sombrero is structurally completed. A final inspection revealed a few areas that need touch up and adjustment, which will be actioned now.

Cryogenic Moderator System (CMS) in place

The Cryogenic Moderator System, brought to ESS by German in-kind partner Jülich, was successfully lifted to a hydrogen room on the top floor of the A2T building.

The main function of the CMS is to provide liquid hydrogen for the cold neutron production in the Target moderators. The cold hydrogen slows down the fast thermal neutrons released from the Target, to a speed suitable for the instruments.

Target Monolith

Welding of port tubes and the NN bar to the Monolith vessel continues.

Experimental Halls

LOKI and FREIA

Precast concrete and stairs are in place for the LOKI and FREIA hutches. Platforms and bridges are yet to be installed, and the concrete will be painted in white.

The base plate installation continues for the LOKI beamline and cave. The detector vessel will be moved in position in just a few weeks’ time.

Experimental Halls 1 & 2

The bunker crane runway reinforcement works are now completed inside Experimental Hall 1 and the scaffolding has been taken down.  The bunker cranes are subject to redesign at the manufacturer in Norway and will be reinstalled soon.
