Accelerator

Normal Conducting Linac

Conditioning of the first drift tube linac tank as well as beam up to the MEBT faraday cup were performed in parallel. A shorter maintenance period has then allowed for some physical alignment work, cable re-pulling and small repairs down in the tunnel, with conditioning activities resuming on Wednesday 20 April.

Permanent furniture has been assembled in the ESS main control room, from where Accelerator operations activities are controlled and monitored.

Spoke Linac

A pressure test of the welded connections for the Spoke cryogenic distribution system has been successfully conducted. Next, a rough leak test will be performed.

Cryomodule testing

After a few upgrades and maintenance work, cryomodule number four is now connected to the RF power sources and the incoming cryogenic valve box, for cool down to follow.

Target

Monolith shielding

The outer shielding blocks around the Target Monolith have been stacked up to the rim of the vessel. The overlapping steel blocks are installed in three layers; orange, blue and turquoise.

Inside the vessel, survey and alignment works are ongoing. The installation of inner shielding blocks is expected to start soon. These blocks will be stacked along the bottom and inner walls of the vessel, leaving a space in the middle for the 2.5-diameter Target wheel, as well as the drive unit and shaft, to be installed here later this year.

Target wheel

Tests of the luminescent coating to the Target wheel continued this week. The Mock-Up and Test Stand in Transport Hall is getting ready for the testing of the target wheel, drive unit and shaft, inside a clean-room confinement.

Experimental Halls

In-bunker installations

Part of the west bunker wall has been dismantled to allow for the installation of bunker wall inserts for the beamlines for instruments CSPEC and BIFROST, located in the long instrument hall.

Feed-through cases will also be installed for the beamlines for instruments ODIN and DREAM, in the south sector of the bunker inside Experimental Hall 1.

Amendments to the bunker crane on both sides of the Monolith are ongoing.

DREAM and ODIN

Interior works continue for the ODIN control cabin and the DREAM cave and adjacent control cabin.
