Towards DTL beam commissioning

Conditioning of Drift Tube Linac (DTL) tank 1 and beam commissioning up to the Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) section’s faraday cup continue, with a plan to introduce a probe beam to the first DTL tank soon, starting the next phase of beam commissioning. After the summer break, installation of DTL tanks 2-4 will commence in the tunnel.

UPS for the Accelerator

Installation of a power back-up system, a so-called Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) system, is under way in the Klystron Gallery. In the event of power loss, the UPS will immediately kick in. There will be three UPS systems installed in the gallery, supporting the entire Accelerator building.

Target high bay

The construction of a cleanroom confinement covering the Monolith area with 3-metre high walls continues. Storage areas and a changing area for staff are also being built. Once the cleanroom is in place, installation of inner shielding to the Target Monolith vessel will start.

LSS frames

The installation of frames for the Light Shutter System (LSS), the interface between the port tubes and neutron guides, continues in the R6 area surrounding the Monolith. With eight upper frames already in place for the west sector, the ESS rigging team are now lifting in the frames for the NN bar area, whilst lower frames are connected from the basement of the Monolith.

Neutron guide for BIFROST

In-bunker installations are ongoing in the west sector, for instrument BIFROST. Anchors, bases and frames are in place, and installation of the neutron guide delivery system, including vacuum chambers and a copper collimator, is in progress. Alignment and vacuum tests will follow.

Chopper for LOKI

Trial installation of the very first chopper at ESS has taken place, for instrument LOKI. This chopper, which is placed just outside the neutron shielding wall 15 metres from the Target centre, is equipped with two counter-rotating discs, placed in cassettes on a rocker.

Bunker wall insert for ODIN

The bunker wall insert, containing part of the neutron guide, has been installed for instrument ODIN in the south sector. Construction of the ODIN instrument is in progress in Experimental Hall 1, with a control cabin in place and the instrument cave assembly starting this summer.

Bunker cranes

A Site Acceptance Test for the bunker crane on the northwest side of the Target has been held, which involved a test lift of 25 tonnes (5 tonnes overweight). Commissioning of the southeast bunker crane will follow.
