Accelerator

DTL3

The third Drift Tube Linac tank is subject to installation in the tunnel. Connection of the water manifold cooling system is ongoing and will be followed by electrical connections.

Meanwhile, DTL2 – the last Drift Tube Linac section to be installed before the next phase of beam commissioning – is under preparations in an on-site workshop.

Cryogenics

Leak tight tests continue at a steady pace for the Cryogenic Distribution System in the Superconducting Linac. Full tests of the entire piping from coldbox to end box and back are planned for later this autumn.

The seventh medium beta cryomodule has completed a full test cycle inside the Test Stand 2 bunker, and is ready for installation. The bunker is being prepared for tests of the very first high beta cavity cryomodule. The high beta cryomodules are delivered from French in-kind partner CEA, with four elliptical cavities provided by STFC, UK.

Target

Inner shielding

A number of inner shielding blocks have arrived to ESS from supplier Asturfeito in Spain, and are currently stored on the Target high bay. Inside the cleanroom, the two large pancake shielding blocks are under investigation.

Instruments

Test Beamline

Works have started in the Test Beamline area in Experimental Hall 2, next to LOKI. Formwork and reinforcement are in place for a base slab, with concrete casting following. Next up are the wall elements, beam stop, roof and doors. The Test Beamline will be the first to receive neutrons at ESS!

ESTIA & SKADI

Base slab castings will also take place in Experimental Hall 1, as both the ESTIA and SKADI cave slabs are being prepared with form and reinforcement. These two instruments occupy beamlines E1 and E2 in the east sector, with some common base structures.

BIFROST

Installation of the bunker to cave neutron guide structure for BIFROST is ongoing. Casings have been placed on the crossbeams, and the insertion of mirror glass guides has started. Inside the experimental cave, the neutron guide installation from the cave entrance to the sample position was completed.

LOKI

The electrical infrastructure works for LOKI continues. Cable raceways on the control cabin roof is subject to installation, and will be followed by cable pulling and rack installation.

A few more wall shielding elements have been installed.

Works will soon start in the bunker to cave area, where a collimation vessel and shielding blocks will be installed.
