Accelerator

Cryomodule pilot installation

The first two cryomodules have arrived in the tunnel. One spoke and one medium beta cryomodule are part of a pilot installation, which will result in a detailed plan for the cryomodule serial installation starting this summer.

Normal Conducting Linac

RF conditioning of the Drift Tube Linac is in progress.

A Safety Readiness Review, held in preparation for the next phase of beam commissioning, will be held 22-23 March. The purpose of the review is to audit the readiness to safely commission and operate. This will result in a number of recommendations.

Whilst the power sources in the Normal Conducting Gallery are fully operational and handed over to operations, power tests and installations continue upstream in the Gallery building.

Cryogenic Distribution System

Repairs and modification works for the Cryogenic Distribution System, covering misalignment, leakages and vibration issues detected during the cooldown tests earlier this year, are in progress.

Target

Moderator

The interface between the Target Wheel and the Moderator has been tested in the Target Mock-Up and Test Stand with the wheel rotating at full speed. The test confirmed the design and the test is approved.

Inner shielding

The north rim shielding block was installed in the Monolith vessel this week, completing level 4 of the inner shielding installation. The next step is to weld pipes to the outlets within the blocks. This will be followed by vacuum tests, before level 5 blocks are put in place.

Active Cell

In the Active Cell’s process cell, test cutting with the Shaft Cutting Station has been performed. During cutting no personnel is allowed inside the cell and the procedure is carried out remotely. Cameras set-up in the cell records the operation.

Concrete shielding doors

A Site Acceptance Test (SAT) was successfully completed for the three concrete shielding doors located in the triangular rooms on all levels of the utility building.

Inserts and plugs

The installation of inserts and plugs is substantially completed in the south sector. Inserts are installed in the beam ports surrounding the Target and will provide transport for the neutrons in the very first part of their journey towards the sample position of each instrument.

Next up is the east sector, where three inserts for instruments VESPA, SKADI and ESTIA will be installed as well as seven plugs.

In an on-site integration tent, optics assembly for the BIFROST insert was finalised this week, with leak tests following. The C-SPEC insert’s leak test was approved, adding it to the list of installation ready inserts.

Instruments

DREAM

With plugs, inserts and neutron beam windows in place in the first part of the south sector, in-bunker works have now commenced for DREAM. Chopper bases and neutron guides are mounted.

Outside the bunker, pedestals are in place along the beamline from bunker to cave, and the installation of the neutron guide system is starting.

ODIN

The walls for the experimental cave are in place. Cave door, roof and beam stop will follow.

The neutron guide section from the bunker wall to the cave is in place and aligned. Vacuum tests are next.

BEER

Installation of section 1 neutron guide is ongoing. The installation connects to the previously completed section 2 neutron guide in the E02 Beamline Gallery and will reach to the bunker wall in the west sector.

Upper guide shielding is in place for part of the neutron guide installed in E02.

LOKI

Installation of shielding walls around the sample area has started.

TBL

Construction of a control cabin for the Test Beamline is in progress. The building will be located behind the cave and will be used for experiment control and supervision of experiments and tests conducted using the Test Beamline.

SKADI

Preparations are under way to install the bunker wall feedthrough, including neutron optics, for SKADI.

ESTIA

In-bunker feeder and chopper pit integration is ongoing inside a tent structure inside Experimental Hall 1.
