Join a guided tour of ESS, partly by bus and partly on foot as part of Kulturnatten Lund 2026.

We will take you on a guided tour around ESS (European Spallation Source). The tour starts with a bus tour around the facility and ends with a walk through one of the large instrument halls where cutting-edge research will be conducted.

The bus starts from the ESS parking lot at Partikelgatan 2. From the bus a guide will explain and show the length of the linear accelerator, the size of the huge halls where the experiments will take place and parts of the offices where the researchers and staff work. The bus will then stop to drop you off at one of the instrument halls where you will have the opportunity, together with a guide, to walk through the hall and get up close to some of the unique instruments that are now being completed for cutting-edge neutron research.

Come and discover the fascinating world of neutrons and see how ESS will contribute to science. It will be a visit filled with interesting facts, future discoveries and fascinating insights.

• Book in advance – you cannot drop in unannounced.
• The bus tour and walk through the instrument hall takes a total of about 45 - 60 minutes, where half of the time consists of the bus tour and the rest is a walk without a break.
• Due to safety procedures, the minimum age for visitors is 12 years old. All participants between the ages of 12 and 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. In absence of identification document for the minor, a parent/guardian must verify age and identity. If there is any uncertainty about verification, the security guard will decide whether entry is allowed.
• It is not possible to participate in the bus tour only. All participants must stay together with their guide so must do both the bus tour and the walking part.
• Important: when boarding the bus, ID checks will be carried out and your ticket will be scanned. Keep your ticket as it will also be scanned at the end of the tour.
• You are not allowed to bring bags or backpacks on the guided tour. Only smaller bags, such as handbags, are allowed. Security personnel may ask for the bag to be opened to ensure that no unauthorized items are brought into the ESS.
• Most tours are with a Swedish-speaking guide. It is indicated in the schedule which tours have an English-speaking guide
• Accessiblity: there is no alternative vehicle for the bus tour, which means you must be able to climb on and off a coach with steps without assistance, as well as to walk without a planned rest for about 30 minutes. For any other accessibility needs please contact us in advance.
