20 August 2018

Last week on the construction site marked the culmination of a summer full of activity on the Target Building. Castings were made in nearly all areas of the building, including the Technical Gallery, Utility Area, Transport Hall, Accelerator-to-Target Area, as well as in the adjacent D03 and D01 instrument halls. A section of the circular hanging walls around the Target Monolith is set to be cast this week.

All E-buildings—the long-range instrument hall and support labs—are currently undergoing extensive interior works and installations.

The first cryomodule vacuum vessel was delivered to site from French in-kind partner CEA. The 6.6-metre-long vessel will be used for testing and preparations for the installation of the 30 cryomodules and elliptical cavities that will make up the bulk of the superconducting LINAC. In Spain, where in-kind partner ESS Bilbao is building the ESS target system, production of the Tungsten bricks for the target wheel was completed.

Activities are increasing on the perimeter of the ESS technical facility. Groundworks for the ESS Campus buildings (B01, B02, F04) have begun at the western edge of the site, and the superstructure for the ESS Logistics Building (F03), at the east end, is going up quickly. And finally, Science Village, a development on the land between ESS and MAX IV, has received clearance from the Swedish national government to move forward with planning the construction of buildings that will house laboratories, offices, lodging, restaurants and other services that will help to support researchers at the two complementary science facilities.
