Target

Superstructure erection has now reached the Accelerator to Target (A2T) area, with shorter columns being erected. This will be followed by filigree slabs, then more steel. The high bay part of the A2T will be built on three levels, all to house ventilation equipment. The beams for the temporary crane are in place on the Monolith high bay, and next week steel works will continue in the direction of the Active Cell. At the same time, sandwich panels will start being added to the Monolith high bay steel. Precast concrete walls are being installed for the Target Entrance Building, and superstructure steel erection is also starting up in one of the lab buildings and the Transport Hall. The last casting for the north retaining wall is planned for next week. After completion of this area, work with top-fill and refill on the sides of the Dog Leg tunnel will begin. A few more shielding castings remain in the Dump to Target area.

Accelerator

Linac Warm Units (LWUs) are to be positioned in between all the cryomdoules inside the tunnel, as well as all the way up the Dog Leg ramp to the Accelerator to Target, with 75 LWUs in total. They contain strong quadrupole magnets, with the purpose of steering and correcting the proton beam. The LWUs are a perfect example of the complex in-kind contribution process at ESS; the base is manufactured in the UK by STFC Daresbury Laboratory, the magnets are prepared in Italy by Elettra, assembly is then made back in the STFC lab in the UK,  and configuration and testing has been performed in Danish institute Danfysik – after which the units arrive at ESS in Lund, where performance tests are currently ongoing with the Power Converters division and Italian engineers from Elettra.

Erection of a 15x15m tent is in progress in the east part of the large Experimental Hall. The ramps between the Hall and the Beam Line Gallery are subject to surface treatment, with the purpose of obtaining a better base for forklifts, small trucks etc. going up and down these ramps. Other activities coming up in the large Experimental Hall include preparation for casting the foundation for the experiment cave housing instrument NMX (first instrument on the west side of the hall) and beam line shielding for the CSPEC, Magic and Bifrost neutron beam line in the middle section of the Beam Line Gallery. Interface plates, on top of the row of pillars stretching through the Gallery, are already in place on some beam lines.

General

In the Waste Building, formwork and reinforcement for the high walls continue. The last base slab is scheduled for casting next week.

External completion is ongoing outside Sprinkler Building - asphalting is scheduled for next week. External works on the experimental buildings is also progressing - concrete collision barriers have been installed outside the gates, and levelling of the ground for asphalting is completed.Within the next few weeks the area will be asphalted. Completion of the wall on the south borders of the site is progressing.

ESS was given early access to the Accelerator to Target tunnel this week, to allow continued work on the phase reference line piping works, which have already been completed in the tunnel.
