Target

Superstructure erection as well as roof works continue in all accessible areas. In the Accelerator to Target (A2T), filigree slabs are being installed in order for our 'Target Concrete' team to cast a layer of top screed. Installation of shielding plates to the ceiling was completed inside the Active Cell, and installation of a crane beam is scheduled to start shortly.

Accelerator

The shielding steel for the beam dump inside Dog Leg has arrived from in-kind partner ESS Bilbao and is soon to be installed using the large overhead crane. Piping and connections of the Cryo Distribution System (CDS) from the tunnel to the coldbox, via the cryo-transfer line culverts, are ongoing.

General

The foundation for the NMX cave was cast just before Christmas, and this is now ready for the next stage. The structure will be about seven metres tall when completed.

Lab furniture and equipment has arrived on site, and is currently awaiting installation in one of the labs and the substation.

Three campus buildings, the office, workshops and entrance building, are all in progress - with an aim to complete all interior and facade works by the end of 2020,  ready for ESS to move in early 2021. Office furniture will be moved from the site office to the office space on the first floor of substation in readiness for ESS staff moving out there.

Installations are ongoing inside the Central Utility Building, and in the large hall, piping, steel supports and various installations are ongoing.

MEP 2020

2020 will bring a lot of action for the MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) installations with all  Experimental Hall 1 buildings, starting before the summer break.

Various installations will be ongoing simultaneously throughout the different buildings; MEP installations for labs and offices in the Target Entrance Building, two of the labs, as well as sprinkler, ventilation and electrical systems in two experimental hall buildings. At the same time, electrical infrastructure cabling from two substations to the Installation Galleries running in culverts underneath the Hall 1 buildings, will continue throughout 2020, providing power to all target buildings when the systems are ready for testing and commissioning.

These installations will be carried out in parallel with the works to be performed by ESS Target Division, NSS and ICS – close collaboration and coordination will be necessary to achieve completion of MEP during 2021 in the lead-up to the ESS milestone “Beam on Target” (BOT) scheduled for summer 2022.
