Target

The superstructure erection for the Target Entrance Building started this week. This is located in the west end of the building, and will be an area for office and controls for future target station operators.

Steel works for Experimental Hall 2 is progressing well, with the outer frame of this building being put into place. This building will house instruments such as LoKI and FREJA, and will also contain the north and west sectors of the bunker, which also houses the first part of the long neutron guides, leading neutrons out to the experiments to be performed in the eight scientific instruments located in Experimental Hall 3. One of those instruments is NMX (west end of the hall), which is now subject to final casting of the central parts of the foundation plinth.

Furnishing of the labs adjacent to the long, curved Experimental Hall is progressing at a rapid pace. At the same time, office furniture has arrived for all the rooms in the upper office area.

Accelerator

Installation of cryodistribution system spokes started this week, after 13 of the spoke valve boxes were delivered to site. Tests are currently ongoing inside the Test Stand 2 bunker, where cooling of the cryomodule inside is being tested in different stages. Reports from the control room demonstrate that the conditions inside the bunker are stable, and it will shortly be possible to cool the helium to cryogenic temperatures (i.e. it becomes liquid helium).

The second part of the Accelerator after the ion source, the LEBT (Low Energy Beam Transport), has been dismantled awaiting additional parts. It is now ready for reassembly, including installation of parts such as beam diagnostics, iris, solenoids & collimator. The purpose of the LEBT is to match and focus the beam from the ion source to the next component in line, the Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), via the magnets of the solenoids. It also incorporates a small chopper system that removes the low quality front and back end of each proton beam, and the iris containing six blades, with the function of reducing the current.

Work is ongoing with drawing cables in the first 50 metres of the Gallery Building. Approximately 130,000 metres of cable will be installed before the summer, and all cables are to be cut, connected with special connection gear, such as D-sub or coaxial, and individually labelled. All cables will also be subject to extensive testing, before handover to ESS.

General

The last concrete casting for the floors of the B02 workshop building is scheduled this week, and is in fact the last concrete casting for all of the Campus buildings, excluding the concrete floor of the Campus plaza area, to be completed before handover.
