Target

A concrete top coat (screed) has been applied on all three levels of the Target Entrance Building, and metal frameworks for gypsum walls are being fitted. Interior works will be ongoing throughout the autumn, and parallel installation works (piping, cabling, ventilation, etc.) will begin in October. Meanwhile externally, installation of a curtain wall is ongoing and roof works are progressing,

In the Monolith and Utility High Bay, floors have been treated with epoxy and are now covered with protective boards. The section of the High Bay closest to the Accelerator to Target (A2T) will be done once the A2T roof is completed. Installation of the High Bay overhead crane, which is expected to be operational by the end of October, is ongoing.

The steel superstructure is now in place for the A2T, and installation of sandwich panels is ongoing. Inside the building, painting is underway, and epoxy treatment will follow later this month. The A2T ventilation stack, measuring 32 metres (15 metres of which will protrude from the roof), will be installed shortly.

Installation of the steel frame and hollow-core slabs for the entrance area of the Transport Hall have been completed, with reinforcement for screed to follow. Columns have been painted and a primer applied to the floor inside the Transport Hall, where the overhead crane is now operational. ESS will gain parallel access this week in order to start the installation of a mock-up area. At the same time, conventional installation works will be ongoing.

Testing and commissioning of a Target Substation are in the final stages, meaning it will be ready for handover to ESS at the end of October.

Experiment Halls

Construction of a scientific cave for the BIFROST instrument is in progress inside Experimental Hall 3, with the third layer walls having recently been cast. A team of UK lab fitters have been able to return to Lund to complete the lab installations in the adjacent laboratories. An estimated eight weeks' work remains before the labs can be subject to testing and commissioning prior to operation. Meanwhile, electrical Infrastructure works are ongoing, which involve electrical power and network infrastructure installations in all experiment buildings. Raceway supports and cable trays are currently being mounted.

A Neutron Beam Optics Assembly (NBOA)  integration tent is being equipped in the east corner of the large, curved hall. NBOA is the first physical part of each instrument and the neutron guide section just next to the moderator, closest to the target wheel. The NBOA is connected to a Neutron Beam Port Insert (NBPI), which is a steel plug that will be inserted into the beam port for each instrument inside the Monolith. The temporary tent structure consists of separated areas with different environmental requirements, and will be used to test, align and prepare components before installation in the Monolith area.

The steel structure for the section connecting part 1 to part 2 of the Beam Line Gallery is progressing. The so-called seismic frame closest to the Beam Line wall by Experimental Hall 2 is already completed.

The metal roof for Experiment Hall 1 has been completed over the bunker area, with the roof membrane to follow. Installation of the remaining roof trusses at the end nearest the A2T will start this week. At the same time, the curved cantilever roof is being fitted along the façade. Meanwhile, in Experimental Hall 2, installation of permanent light fittings is ongoing, and the first cable ladders are being fitted on the north wall.

Preparations are ongoing to start the next phase of the shielding bunker installation, as ESS gains parallel access to the Hall 2 side of the bunker area surrounding the Monolith later this month. A steel structure outlining the bunker will be mounted, while the installation, testing and commissioning of the bunker crane continues. Installation of concrete blocks for the bunker is set to begin by the end of October. The bunker crane, which by then will be operational to perform heavy lifts, will be  used for this task.
