Accelerator

In recent months, ESS has cooled down the cavities of a cryomodule prototype and have been conducting a number of tests. The coming week brings even more excitement as the first ESS cryomodule - part of a serial production - is scheduled to arrive on the ESS site from In-Kind Partner CEA/IRFU (Institute for research on the fundamental laws of the Universe) in France.

Technical Infrastructure works, including cable pulling, rack population and other installations, are ongoing throughout the Klystron Gallery and Accelerator tunnel. In the Normal Conducting Gallery we currently have three modulators and four klystrons in place, with the last two arriving shortly.

As part of the installation of a Personnel Safety System, an access control system for the normal conducting part of the ESS Linac has been installed. In the Front End Building, this consists of a Personnel Access System and a Material Access Station. Testing and commissioning of this system is currently underway.

Target

In the Accelerator to Target (A2T) area, sandwich panel installation is progressing, with the south side already completed. This will be followed by roof works. Meanwhile, in the three-storey building Target Entrance building, interior works are ongoing. On the ground floor and first floor, there will be an office space for future ESS Target personnel, and the ESS Main Control Room, where steel framework and gypsum walls are being installed.

The Integrated Controls Division will gain access to this area to start ESS installations when installations by construction partner Skanska are completed. The top floor will contain  changing rooms and lockers  for future operators accessing the controlled areas in the Target Building.

Experimental Halls

In the Experimental Halls, the installation of the steel panels for the curved roof on the facades of Experimental Hall 2 is complete in the north west end. The cantilever roof (‘sombrero’) is also in progress on the south side of Experimental Hall 1.

The inner runway and consoles are now welded in place for the crane for the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) bunker which will serve the north and west sectors, situated inside Experimental Hall 2. Manufacturing of the main girder - the beam to be moved across the area holding the crane hook, is ongoing with an expected delivery to site early October. NSS access to the area to begin the steel frame installation is scheduled for end of September. The superstructure erection of the Beamline Gallery (part 2) is progressing. The aim is to have the entire superstructure, including TRP roofing, completed by the end of October.

In Experimental Hall 3, the long instrument hall, construction of the BIFROST instrument cave continues. The third layer walls have been completed and cast-in-situ.

There are also Infrastructure works ongoing inside the large, curved hall. All cable ladders are now in place and earthing is progressing. Cabling works will follow next week.
