Accelerator buildings

A small team from Italian in-kind collaborator INFN has arrived at the ESS site and is now working with the Drift Tube Linac (DTL) tanks inside a workshop in the accelerator buildings. The first two tanks were vacuum tested, and all drift tubes, mounted and aligned.

Waveguide testing is ongoing in the DTL section in the tunnel and the connecting structure in the RF cell on the Klystron Gallery side, getting this area ready for the first DTL tank installation in the linac.

The first proper cryomodule (CM01) that arrived from French in-kind partner CEA last week is in the preparation area outside the Test Stand 2 bunker. Once all tests have been successfully performed on the cryomodule prototype that is currently inside the TS2 bunker, tests will begin on CM01.

Completion works for the helium collector piping in the high beta and medium beta sections of the tunnel are ongoing, and the piping installation, which runs through the Cryo Transfer Line gallery, is now performed inside the Coldbox hall.

Target buildings

Commissioning of the overhead crane serving the Target high bay continues – now with test weights attached to the hook. It will be operational on 23 October.

Metal cladding of the high bay part of the Transport Hall to the Target building progresses, as the first vertical metal sheets have been mounted.

Sandwich panel installation for the Accelerator to Target (A2T) building is substantially completed, whilst roofing and installation of a parapet is ongoing. Inside the building internal finishes including painting is ongoing, and gypsum walls are following.

The 32-metre-high A2T stack will be delivered and installed during the first part of October.

Experimental Halls & Labs

The last two roof trusses for Experimental Hall 1 in the east end will be mounted shortly, at the same time as roofing continues and the curved roof progresses.

Sandwich panels for the lab adjacent to Experimental Hall 2 are soon to be fully installed, and shortly, mounting of the last steel columns for the east gable of the hall will follow.

With the scaffolding tower for the installation of the bunker crane dismantled, fences are now in place around the working area for the neutron shielding bunker inside Experimental Hall 2. Preparation of the area, including dust binding of the floors, is ongoing and the first part of the steel frame is coming up soon.

Curtain wall façade installation is ongoing for the lab building to Experimental Hall 1. When completed, it will look similar to the Target Entrance glass facades. Roofing is done and interior works, including gypsum walls and in-wall installations, are ongoing.

Part 2 of the steel frame for the Beamline Gallery is completed, and TRP roofing will follow shortly.

Installation of the two labs to Experimental Hall 3 continues, as well as electrical infrastructure works in the hall.

The BIFROST instrument cave construction will soon reach the fourth layer of shielding walls.

Civil construction

Installation of a waterproof membrane and top-fill over the Dog Leg ramp - the last part of the Accelerator tunnel before reaching the Target building, is ongoing. The membrane consists of three layers ensuring waterproofing, which are topped off with a layer of soil. Seed planting will follow later this autumn.
