Accelerator buildings

Klystron number five, out of a total six for the Normal Conducting Lina,c has been delivered to the designated spot in the Gallery and is now subject to installation.

The Material and Personnel Access Stations for safe entry to the Accelerator tunnel during operation is in place, and system commissioning is ongoing.

Cable pulling activities continue, both sides of the stubs - in the Accelerator and in the Klystron Gallery.

Preparations, which include bead pulling, field measure and field tuning, are ongoing in the designated workshop for the ESS Drift Tube Linac (DTL) tanks. The first DTL is expected to be ready for installation in the Accelerator tunnel early 2021.

Target buildings

The lower part Monolith vessel, recently delivered from in-kind partner ESS Bilbao in Spain, has been lowered to its permanent position on the Monolith puck. Survey and alignment activities are ongoing. Next, the medium vessel part will be lowered on top, the two parts fitted together and closed with the vessel lid.

TRP roofing is completed, and roof membrane has commenced for the Accelerator to Target building. Metal cladding of the facades is ongoing. Framework for gypsum walls has started inside the building on all levels.

Painting is ongoing inside the Transport Hall, both of the promatect walls and the steel structures. Cable ladders are mounted inside the hall.

Gypsum wall fittings, as well as installations, are ongoing on all floors of the Target Entrance building. ESS installations for the Main Control Room are set to start in February 2021.

Experimental Halls & Labs

The last sandwich panels for Experimental Hall 1 are mounted in the east end of the hall, at the same time as TRP roofing is ongoing in this area. In the west end, TRP is completed and roof membrane is following. Installations, including ventilation, piping and electrical, are ongoing in the bunker and west areas. The overhead crane for this hall will arrive on site for installation in a couple of weeks. A protective tent structure is up on the scaffolding surrounding the bunker area, and welding of the consoles for the bunker crane has commenced.

Curtain walls are substantially completed for the lab building to Experimental Hall 1. Installations are ongoing on all floors, including piping and ventilation above ceiling. Gypsum walls are almost completed inside the building and painting is now ongoing.

The installation of roof trusses is now complete for Experimental Hall 2 and next up is sandwich panel installation for the east end of the hall. The cantilever curved roof for on the west gable next to Transport Hall is about to start. The overhead crane has been installed, and will be operational shortly, ready for ESS to lift in concrete shielding blocks for the bunker later in November. The bunker crane beam is set to arrive on site before the end of the month. The ESS installation of the steel structure for the west sector of the bunker is nearing completion.

Roof works are ongoing for the lab building to Experimental Hall 2. Mounting of a curtain wall will commence shortly, which will result in the same kind of shiny glass facades as the ones on the Experimental Hall 1 lab building.
