Getting ready for beam commissioning in October

Preparations for beam commissioning continues in the normal conducting linac.

Klystron Gallery

In the normal conducting gallery, high power RF testing continues for DTL modulators, klystrons and RF distribution systems.

Infrastructure works continue in the medium beta and high beta parts of the gallery. Cable pulling and terminations through the stubs to the linac is under way as well as positioning and fit out of racks.

Cryomodules

With two serial-produced medium beta cryomodules already on the ESS premises, two more cryomodules will be received from in-kind partner CEA in France during October. All cryomodules are to be fully tested in the Test Stand 2 bunker before installation starts in the superconducting part of the ESS linac next year.

Target

Proton beam drift room

A support frame for the 12-metre-long pipe to be inserted into the tight space in-between the linac side of the A2T tunnel and the Target Monolith is in place. The pipe will protrude about 20 centimetres on the Monolith side and be connected to the remote clamp.

The openings for the proton pipe and the underneath manhole for the installation phase will eventually be fully closed with concrete plugs.

Target Monolith

More neutron beam port tubes have been delivered to the high bay. On 11 October a team from ENSA, as part of the Spanish in-kind contribution via ESS Bilbao, will arrive on site and shortly thereafter welding of the port tubes to the Monolith vessel will start.

Utility

In the Utility block, where most of the system installations feeding the Target processes are located, water cooling, drainage and distribution systems as well as helium piping and associated systems, are under installation and testing.

Active Cell

The frame for the upper intrabay door is in place, which will allow for lowering and positioning of the 58-tonnes door.

The drive assembly is in place on the Transport Hall side.

The installation package for the Active Cell, including the remote handling system, is an in-kind contribution from UKAEA in the UK.

Floor valves

Doors for the floor valves have been installed. These floor valves can be opened when lowering casks to the maintenance and process cells of the Active Cell.

Experimental Halls

LoKI installation

A number of truckloads of items have arrived on site for the start of installation for the LoKI instrument. From next week, concrete plinths will be positioned and grouted in place. This will be followed by base plates. The detector vessel for LoKI was delivered already in June and is currently stored in the northeast corner of the hall. The LoKI instrument is UK in-kind contribution via STFC's Isis Neutron & Muon Source.

Bunker cranes

The overhead cranes serving the area of the neutron shielding bunker surrounding the Target Monolith inside Experimental Halls 1 and 2 are subject to reinforcement works.
