Accelerator

Installation of the faraday cup (a beam collector) for the first drift tube linac (DTL1) is underway in the normal conducting linac.

All header units for the cryogenic distribution system for the spoke linac are in place in the tunnel. Alignment of the units between valve boxes is ongoing and, once precise positioning has been achieved, welding will follow.

Installation and testing of the RF systems for the superconducting part of the Linac continues. This involves populating each RF cell with a lot of cables, cooling, klystrons, modulators and controls. Further modulators and RF power stations are subject to tests in test stand 3, and the third medium beta cryomodule in line has entered the test stand 2 bunker for cooling and power tests to be performed.

Target

Active Cells

In the Active Cells facility, the lower and upper intrabay doors, separating the process and maintenance cells, have been fully installed and are now subject to Site Acceptance Tests (SAT). The lower door, weighting 53 tonnes, was tested last week and the upper door will follow shortly.

The remote handling installations in Active Cells are performed as an in-kind contribution from the UK, with UKAEA and RACE as the main partner.

Monolith

The remote clamp port block has been installed, right between the proton beam window port block and the proton beam drift tube coming from the accelerator. The last section of the vacuum tube for the protons travelling to the target is connected to the proton beam window via the remote clamp.

The clamp will be operated remotely using an extension rod, lowered down from the high bay through the outer shielding blocks and connected to the remote clamp.

ESS main control room

Electrical installations are ongoing on the first floor of the Target Entrance building, where the ESS main control room will be located. Trunking for electrical sockets and data cables are being mounted along the walls, and floor pedestals with sockets will be positioned. All installations are routed to a pre-installed system of cables and ducting under the raised floorboards.

In the ESS main control room there will ultimately be 12 workstations and screens along the walls to monitor operations.

The Accelerator operations team will be the first to move in mid-February.

Experimental Halls

DREAM

The first layer of walls for the DREAM experimental cave are in place, and the hollow wall elements have been filled with the first instalment of in-situ cast concrete.

Bunker infrastructure installations

Electrical installations are in progress inside the neutron shielding bunker, with consoles and cable trays being mounted on the bunker walls and pillars.
