Conditioning and RF power tests

Conditioning continues in the normal conducting linac, with RF tests ongoing for the first Drift Tube Linac (DTL) tank. Conditioning of the MEBT bunchers was successfully completed..

Meanwhile, testing of the RF system continues throughout the Klystron Gallery, in medium beta cells as well as the first few spoke cells.

CDS Spokes

Welding of the header unit interconnections to the valveboxes was completed this week. The piping connecting 13 valveboxes have now been successfully welded in place. Pressure tests will follow.

Cryomodule testing

Six out of the total nine medium beta cryomodules have been delivered to ESS from in-kind partner CEA in France. Three of them have completed their test cycle inside the Test Stand bunker, with number four going in soon.

Target

Monolith shielding

109 shielding wedges have been placed in-between the 39 port tubes and the NN bar, and a top plate positioned on top. On here, outer shielding blocks will be stacked.

Shielding blocks are in place in the Monolith R6 area, on the opposite side of the proton beam entrance to the vessel.

Proton beam shielding has started with blocks filling up the space around the proton beam window port block and remote clamp.

Target wheel

Tests of the luminescent coating of the Target wheel surface is in progress. The tests, which illuminates the coating with a LED light, is performed by members of the ESS Beam Diagnostics team.

The Mock-up and Test Stand inside the Target Transport Hall is being prepared for a clean room installation, prior to handling tests with the Target wheel components in here.

Experimental Halls

Neutron shielding bunker

The roof elements for the west sector bunker were fitted and verified. The heavy concrete blocks have now been taken done again.

Installation of reinforcement bolts continues for the bunker crane runway on the north side of the Monolith, with a plan to have the crane reinstalled and tested later this spring. Scaffolding is installed for bunker crane works to also commence on the south side.

Bunker sleeves

Bunker wall feed-through cases for instruments ODIN and DREAM is scheduled to start this month. The east and west sector beamlines will follow.

LOKI, in the north sector, was the first instrument to get a feed-through case and neutron guide installed into the bunker wall earlier this year.

ODIN

The structure for the ODIN control cabin, sample preparation and storage area is complete, and internal installations – including ventilation and electrical cabling - continues inside the building. Completion is forecasted for later this month.

Later in April construction works for the ODIN experimental cave will commence, starting with a reinforced in-site cast base slab, including a ramp.

DREAM

Installations are ongoing inside the DREAM control cabin and cave.
