Target wheel

On Tuesday 26 April the Target Wheel entered the Target building for the first time. Manufactured at ESS Bilbao in Spain, spray-coated in a factory in Malmö and with coating tests conducted in the long instrument hall, the wheel was transported to the Transport Hall and the Mock-up and Test Stand (MUTS). The wheel was carefully lowered into a designated space inside the cleanroom-confined test stand.

Over the next few months extensive testing of handling and mechanical rotation of the wheel will take place. Next, the shaft will be installed on top of the wheel, and later also the drive unit.

Target Monolith

The Target Monolith area is being prepared for a cleanroom installation. At the moment, extensive cleaning of the entire high bay is taking place. Once the cleanroom has been built, the installation of inner shielding blocks begins.

Accelerator to Target (A2T)

As the installation of overpressure vents to the wall on the top level of the A2T hydrogen room was completed, all installation equipment was lifted down from the roof this week.

The cryostat for the Cryogenic Moderator System (CMS) is installed in here. Connections to a valve box placed inside Tom’s Room, adjacent to the Monolith connection cell, have been made. Later on, additional piping will connect this system to the connection cell, providing the cooling loops for the moderator system.

Neutron bunker wall inserts

Preparations are under way for the installation of in-bunker neutron guides for BIFROST and then for ODIN. Feed-through casing is grouted to the openings made in the bunker wall. At the same time, the optics inside the feedthroughs are aligned and sealed and the components vacuum tested. The first bunker wall insert is scheduled for installation in the west sector of the bunker, for the BIFROST instrument.

Bunker cranes

Both bunker cranes have now arrived to ESS. At the moment, a number of bolts are installed to the crane rails, to reinforce the structure. The two cranes are planned to be installed both sides of the Monolith this coming week.

Accelerator

All header units, connecting the valve boxes for the cryogenic system in the spokes section has been welded and leak tested. Right now, pipe leak tests are in progress for the elliptical cryogenic system, in preparation for connection of the two sections.

RF conditioning of the first Drift Tube Linac (DTL) tank continues. This week a Safety Readiness Review for beam commissioning from the Ion Source to DTL tank 1 will be held.

The first elliptical cryomodule not to have been pre-tested at in-kind partner CEA in France has been installed inside the test stand bunker. Radio-frequency power is on with cool down to 2 Kelvin (-271 degrees Celsius) following.
