Accelerator

Beam commissioning up to the first Drift Tube Linac’s faraday cup will be concluded shortly, after which the temporary shielding wall plug will be removed and preparation for the installation of Drift Tube Linac tanks 2-4 can start.

Cryomodules

To date, four medium beta cryomodules are fully tested and ready for installation. One cryomodule is installed inside the on-site test bunker for RF power cooldown tests. Another module is in the test stand inspection area, ready for testing.

Two high beta cryomodules have been delivered from CEA in France.

Nine out of 13 Spoke cryomodules have arrived to ESS, after testing at the Freia lab at Uppsala University.

Test installation of a medium beta elliptical cryomodule is ongoing in the superconducting part of the Accelerator tunnel.

Klystron Gallery power tests

Soak testing of RF power stations as well as RF cell power tests are ongoing in several medium beta cells, where each modulator powers four klystrons.

Target Active Cells

A Shaft Cutting Station has been mounted onto a previously installed platform inside the Process Cell of the Active Cells Facility. A Site Acceptance Test has been carried out, involving test cutting of a robust steel pipe. This installation is part of the UK in-kind contribution to ESS via UKAEA.

Target inner shielding

The first phase of the Monolith inner shielding installation was completed, with the second batch of shielding blocks arriving on site within the next few weeks.

Instrument BEER

Installation of the neutron guide for BEER continues in the fan-shaped Beamline Gallery. 64,5 metres of base structure is in place, with the vacuum housing for the neutron guide being mounted on top. Mirrotron are performing the works, as part of the Czech in-kind contribution to ESS via Nuclear Physics Institute of the CAS.

Instrument ODIN

The first stage of the in-bunker installation of a neutron guide for ODIN is completed, with vacuum tests performed.

The base slab for the ODIN experimental cave is in place. Prefab wall erection will follow in the autumn.
