Accelerator

Drift Tube Linacs 2-4 are connected and under vacuum with cooling water ready for supply via the water manifolds. The temporary shielding wall is closed and the shielding for the DTL4 Faraday cup is in place. Preparations for RF conditioning are under way. This will involve low level RF power fed from the Klystron Gallery via the stubs, with cavity conditioning at slowly increasing power until we meet the final nominal power level of 14 Hz, 3.2 ms. The routine for conditioning was developed and tested with the DTL1 conditioning last year.

Final integration tests of the Personnel Safety System (PSS1C) were completed. This will enable the upcoming RF conditioning and subsequent beam commissioning to be performed under safe conditions.

In a DTL workshop area inside the Klystron Gallery, Italian in-kind partner INFN has started the assembly of the modules for Drift Tube Linac 5, the last part of the DTL section and the Normal Conducting Linac.

Target

Inside the cleanroom confinement on the Target high bay, flushing of the cooling channels to the inner shielding blocks continues. The first block to have been successfully cleaned to a satisfactory level, is now subject to pipe welding.

Installation of inner shielding into the Monolith vessel will resume once the blocks are welded and quality checks have been performed.

In the Target Mock-Up and Test Stand, synchronisation tests to the Accelerator timing system has been performed.

Instruments

BEER

Installation of the section 2 neutron guide continues in the E02 Beamline Gallery. The delicate neutron guide is positioned and precisely aligned inside a vacuum housing. The housing rests on kinematic mounts on the support structure installed along the capped piles of the beamline. 

ODIN

Delivery of wall elements for the ODIN cave continues. When all blocks are on site, the mounting of blocks will start in the south sector of Experimental Hall 1.

Neutron Beam Port Inserts (NBPI)

The MAGIC NBPI was inspected and the cooling channels put under vacuum. As this insert does not contain a neutron guide, no further action is required on this piece prior to installation into the port tube.

The NMX NBPI was installed on the integration table inside a cleanroom tent, with neutron guide assembly starting shortly.

Neutron Beam Port Inserts will be installed into the port tubes surrounding the Target and will carry the neutrons on their first part of the journey towards the instrument’s sample position.

Experiment Control and Data Curation

Through the joint effort by several ESS teams commissioning data from the BIFROST bandwidth chopper has been collected, using the full ESS controls, data acquisition and data curation pipeline.

The bandwidth chopper’s operation was controlled with the NICOS experiment control software, which will be used for future user operations.

Data from the chopper status and performance was recorded using the infrastructure in the ESS server hall in the Central Utility Building. The automatic migration of the files to the DMSC data storage in Copenhagen is also in place.

The data is being ingested into the data catalogue to make datasets findable, which is a crucial part of the scientific workflow for the future scientists.
