Last week on the construction site, work in the Target area alone included concrete castings, steel core piling, reinforcement and formwork, excavation, blinding and other activities.

The density of heavy machinery and movement of personnel means that the area is off-limits to all but business-critical visits. It will take a year to reinforce and cast the heavy-duty base slab for the short-range instrument hall (D01), which will take place in 78 different castings, four of which have now been completed. 

The steel pillars for the long-range instrument hall (E01) stand up to 14 metres high, and are being fitted with metal roofing sheets. Wall panels for the building are on-site awaiting installation. Inside the Accelerator Tunnel (G01), ESS continues its work with Skanska Direct to perfect the Stub 25 mock-up for the complicated RF waveguides installation that will be propagated across several stubs. The technical installation of the tunnel’s phase reference line is also proceeding. Outside, as part of ESS’s commitment to sustainable practices on the site, masses of excavated soil and clay have found a home in the northeast corner of the site where they can be used in conjunction with landscaping works in that area.
