09 October 2017

Last week on the construction site, the Target Station (D02) remained a hive of mixed activities, while the D01 instrument hall foundational outlines have become increasingly apparent. Meanwhile, the technical and in-kind installations for the Accelerator project provided some of the week's highlights: ESS and its Polish in-kind partners began the technical installation of the Accelerator’s phase reference line. The high-tech tube will run from the Front End Building, the length of the Accelerator tunnel (G01), and right up to the Target wheel (D02). It will provide an exact reference for the proton beam’s pulse frequency, critical to the LINAC’s performance and reliability. Additionally, two12-metre tall 27,000-litre nitrogen tanks were delivered to the site. They are being installed outside the Cryo-Compressor Building (G04) by supplier Air Liquide.

ESS construction partner Skanska is holding its annual Green Week, highlighting sustainable practices at the ESS site. These include maintaining a mass balance of excavation by-products on site and a comprehensive program of reusing and recycling all concrete brought to the site. Skanska was recently recognised as the number one Swedish B2B company in the 2017 Sustainable Brand Index rankings. Green Week will include a number of activities on site, including special tours and toolbox talks with site workers on sustainable work practices.
