Last week on the construction site saw a highly anticipated Target Station (D02) milestone reached as the casting of the heavy concrete walls in the Active Cells Handling Area began.

Following nearly a year of specialised formwork, reinforcement, and technical installations, the aggressive casting schedule for these massive walls will continue for the next few weeks. A single casting can last all day, with tomorrow’s scheduled from 07:00 to 23:00 and requiring the pumping and placement of 90 cubic metres of fluid heavy concrete.

Further concrete work was completed in the Monolith as heavy concrete shielding was cast in the voids between its walls.

Also in the Target Station, the steelcore piling in the Utility area between the Monolith and Active Cells has been substantially completed, allowing for the erection of permanent formwork this week.

A year in the making, the Active Cells walls received their first heavy concrete on the morning of October 31. The concrete is pumped from a mixing truck and through a pipe along the length of the red crane.
