20 November 2017

Last week on the construction site, the fifth, sixth and seventh of the 12 planned heavy concrete castings for the Active Cells walls were completed. This was cause for a celebration on Friday as the site’s Target section marked the 10,000th cubic metre of concrete poured for the ESS Target Station (D02).

Progress on the Sprinkler Building (H10) facade is evident out on site, but what cannot be seen is the remarkable waterproofing process taking place inside the building. The building will serve as a large water storage tank, and 850 cubic metres of tanks within the building have been sprayed with 2.4 tonnes of a waterproofing membrane. Applied at 70 degrees celsius, the membrane hardens within three seconds.

Testing and commissioning of systems throughout the Gallery Building continues in preparation for handover to ESS, and preparations for the ion source delivery next month continue in the Accelerator’s Front End Building (G01). And last Thursday in Wick, Scotland, the first in-kind delivery for the LINAC’s RF Distribution System was put on a truck for delivery to ESS. The specially engineered steelwork is a part of the in-kind contribution from STFC.

On November 13, the role of Skanska Project Director for the civil construction of ESS was officially passed from Dan-Magnus Sköld, who has served in the role from the beginning of construction, to Per Smidfelt. Smidfelt joined the project in May as Skanska’s Project Support Manager in preparation for taking over as Project Director.
