Target

Once pillar installation works have been completed in the Monolith area, installation of the bunker cranes will begin, which are planned to be operational by mid-September. The next phase of the bunker installation will follow this autumn, starting with bunker steel and concrete blocks. Installation of the 14-tonne connection cell steel door, between Tom’s Room and the Monolith, is ongoing. Up on the high bay, fire protection painting of bracing/steel structures is ongoing, as well as internal sealing of the joints between the building parts (Active Cell, Technical Gallery area).

Superstructure erection continues, and  nine 52-metre long roof trusses for Experimental Hall 1 are now in place. All hollow-core slabs and steel pillars are in place for Lab 1A, and sandwich panel mounting is due to start. All concrete works have been completed on the north side of the Dog Leg area, and scaffolding has been removed and the refill works have begun. The last casting on the south side (dog leg cover wall extension) will be performed soon.

Construction of the NMX cave is in the final stage inside Experimental Hall 1. The internal overhead crane has been installed, and the first layer of roof elements are being lifted in. Once the top layer is in place and remaining surfaces have been painted with epoxy, the cave will be structurally completed. The next cave to be built is for the instrument BIFROST - marking of the sample position and taping of the cave perimeter will be done shortly and erection of the cave structure is set to start in August.

Installation of steel interface plates for all beamlines is ongoing in the Beamline Gallery. Concrete piles mark the location of all future beamlines, the interface plate is installed on each pile to facilitate the installation of the support structure. Each beamline will have 22 interface plates. Erection of steel columns for part 2 of the Gallery will also be starting shortly.

Accelerator

Installation of the temporary shielding wall, separating the Normal Conducting Linac (NCL) from the superconductive part of the accelerator, started last week. The 1.5-metre thick concrete blocks to construct the wall is being lifted into place (four blocks in place so far). At the same time, a Personal Access Station (PAS) and Material Access Station (MAS) is being installed to enable transportation of people and goods through the gates. The purpose of the temporary shielding wall and associated Personal Safety Systems is to shield the first part of the tunnel and therefore be able to proceed with commissioning, at the same time as installations continue in the rest of the tunnel.

General

Radiation portal monitoring units are currently being installed as part of the REMS (Radiological and Environmental Monitoring System) for the Logistics Building. These portals will scan all vehicles and people passing through the entrance gate and the Logistics Building. Similar equipment will be installed in the main Entrance Building to Campus.
