Accelerator

Infrastructure

As the accelerator operations team is taking the next steps in beam commissioning, infrastructure works continue on the other side of a temporary shielding wall as well as inside the Klystron Gallery.

Installations, including cable pulling and fitting of rack rows continue in the high beta gallery and stubs. Power tests of installed klystrons, modulators and waveguide systems are ongoing. Four RF power stations are in place in the first spoke cell, and another unit has commenced a test cycle in test stand 3.

Linac Warm Units

The first cycle of particle-free installation of the Linac Warm Units (LWUs) in part of the high beta section of the linac is completed. More LWUs will be delivered from UK in-kind partner STFC in December.

DTL workshop

Work continue with preparation of the Drift Tube Linac modules and tanks in the DTL workshop inside the Klystron Gallery. The work is performed by In-kind partner INFN from Italy.

Cryomodules

Five out of nine medium beta cryomodules are at ESS. One has been successfully tested, and will go to storage. One is inside the test stand 2 bunker, currently warmed up for repair of a vacuum gauge (in presence of French in-kind partner CEA). Tests, including cool down to 2K, will commence. Three more units are on site and are ready for testing.

Ultimately, there will be 9 medium-beta and 21 high-beta elliptical cryomodules, all to be tested in the test stand 2 bunker prior to installation in the linac.

Five out of 13 spokes cryomodules have been fully tested at the Uppsala Freia lab, delivered to ESS and are now subject to further tests in the B02 workshop.

Target

A2T hydrogen room

ESS Facility Management is responsible for the installation of an exterior wall to the hydrogen room on the top level of the Accelerator to Target (A2T) building. A frame for overpressure vents is in place with welding to follow.

The start of installation for the Cryogenic Moderator System, delivered to the hydrogen room last week, will start once the room is weathertight.

Floor valves over Active Cells

Installation of the mechanical drive units is completed, tests are ongoing and handover from UK in-kind partner UKAEA to ESS is following.

Experimental Halls

LOKI instrument

The large detector vessel for the LOKI instrument has been moved to an area adjacent to the bunker and cave to perform vacuum leak tests. Base plates for the LOKI cave and beam guide have been grouted and preparations continue to move the detector vessel inside the perimeter of the cave within a few weeks. The control hutches for instruments LOKI and FREIA are subject to internal finishes, including painting, fitting of windows and doors and electrical installations. Stairs and railings on top of the hutches are in place, as well as a steel bridge to the future cave rooftop of LOKI.

Workshop for neutron port instrumentation

Inside a white integration tent in the east corner of Experimental Hall 3, works continue on the Neutron Beam Port Inserts (NBPI) and the Neutron Beam Optics Assembly (NBOA). These components are to be inserted to the port tubes, currently being welded to the Monolith vessel.

Skanska construction project towards completion

All surfaces and landscaping surrounding the ESS facility are completed.

The construction of the cantilever roof surrounding the target building and two short instrument halls is finished.

A few installations remain to be finalised for Skanska and partners, before final testing and inspections can follow.

Final handover of the construction project: 21 December 2021.
