Accelerator

Beam commissioning activities continue in the normal conducting linac. Tests with beam on the Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) and the the Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) have been conducted, landing the beam safely in the Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT).

Whilst beam commissioning is ongoing, the accelerator Infrastructure team continues with cable pulling and terminations on the other side of the shielding wall and in the klystron gallery. Power tests, involving modulators, klystrons and the waveguide distribution systems, continue on the gallery side.

Meanwhile, the second medium beta cryomodule installed inside the test stand 2 bunker has been is subject to a cycle of RF tests under cooldown to 2K (-271oC).

Target

Target Cantilever roof

The cantilever roof structure covering the Target building and two adjacent Experimental Halls is in place. Bolted to the steel skeleton are 7,776 aluminium lamellae, protruding up to 35 meters beyond the facades of the buildings.

ESS Main Control Room

Preparations are now under way to start the installations in the ESS main control room on the first floor of the Target Entrance building.

In operation, all machine processes at ESS will be controlled and monitored from the main control room. The room will be filled with monitors and control stations - and the ESS staff working around the clock to make sure we produce a stable flux of neutrons.

Hydrogen room

On the top floor of the Accelerator to Target (A2T) building, installation of overpressure vents for the exterior wall is in progress. A metal frame is in place. Equipment for the Cryogenic Moderator System will be installed in this room.

Port tubes

Root welding of the port tubes to the Monolith vessel continues according to plan.

LOKI instrument

Vacuum leak tests are ongoing for the detector vessel, positioned next to the cave structure. The cave perimeter base plates have been grouted in place with concrete. Control hutch superstructure erection is completed and windows are in place. Connection of stairs and steel bridges are ongoing.
