03 December 2018

This week at the construction site, a groundbreaking ceremony for the ESS Campus buildings was held, marking another important milestone for the ESS construction project.

Last week at the construction site, two wall castings in the Active Cell in the Target Building (D02) were completed using heavy concrete. Reinforcement works, which includes both MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) and embedded items from ESS, continue at a fast pace with another 9 walls scheduled for heavy concrete casting before the end of the year.

Formwork is now surrounding the entire Monolith circular walls area, to facilitate the continued reinforcement of the High Bay vault.

Two base slabs in Experimental Hall 1 (D01) as well as one in Experimental Hall 2 (D03) were also cast last week. Another 4 + 2 base slabs are scheduled for casting before the end of the year.

In the Logistics Building (F03), the building is weather-tight and all inner gypsum walls are now in place. MEP works proceed, with electrical installations about to start and earthworks in progress outside the building.

Piles are used to create a solid foundation for our D- & E-buildings. More than 6,800 piles have been installed to date at the construction site: 6,400 concrete piles (with an average length of 13 meters), 374 steel core piles (approximately 25 meters long) and 63 bored piles (on average 15 meters down to the bedrock). This amounts to a total length of 94 km!
