Target

Sandwich panel and roofing work is ongoing in Experimental Hall 1. Steel roof will continue over the bunker area and then a parapet will follow. The adjacent lab is currently being fitted with sandwich panels. Installation of the bunker crane has commenced on the Experimental Hall 2 side of the Monolith.  A scaffolding structure has been built around the area to aid this installation and associated welding. Once completed in September,  the same process will take place on the Hall 1 side of the Monolith. Once the bunker crane is tested and installation. commissioned, the area will once more be accessible for work to continue with the structural frame for the bunker.

The steel structure for part 2 of the Beamline Gallery is progressing, with the frame now fully connected from the beamline wall to  part 1 in the west corner of the fan-shaped building. Sandwich panels for the façade of the A2T (Accelerator to Target) started in the second part of July. The top columns and associated bracings and precast walls on top level are still to be completed. Floor epoxy treatment will start shortly for the lower levels, at the same time as internal sealing works continue on the floors above. Once all internal sealing work is complete on the high bay level, floors will be equipped with epoxy, creating an industrial look and feel.

The substation building connected to the Target area, is subject to SAT3 testing. Testing and commissioning of all of switchgear and transformer installations is under way. This is the last power substation building for the project and will complete the installations by ABB. Handover of the D06 substation to ESS is planned to take place at the end of October.

Accelerator

After a four week break, soil removal has resumed on the construction site. Refill of the berm on the last part of the Accelerator tunnel, the dog leg ramp, continues. All concrete works in the area are now completed, and installation of  the rest of the T-supports around the Dog Leg emergency exit will begin next week.

General

Scaffolding has been removed from the Waste Treatment Facility building, as all roof works are now completed, and façade installations are set to start next week. Inside the building, inner gypsum walls are being installed and electrical installations in the walls have also begun. The façades will be equipped with insulation boards and steel profiles and once completed, the Waste Treatment Facility will look similar to the Central Utility Building (CUB).

Mounting of concrete elements for cladding around the Circular Road continues, and kerb stones are being added along the edge of the roads.

ESS's unique roof starts to take shape!

A sombrero, a bird’s nest, a spaceship - call it what you will - the roof that will give ESS its unique visual identity is now under construction!

Installation of the curved, cantilever roof has started on the Experimental Hall 2 side. This iconic roof structure, will encase the entire Target building and the two adjacent experimental halls. The steel-frame and aluminium 'fins' will extend up to 35 metres from the perimeter of the building.
