Target

Epoxy treatment of the high bay floors started in the Monolith end of the building last week. Preparations are ongoing for the arrival of the 115-tonne L3 high bay crane, expected to arrive at the end of August. A temporary hole has made in the ceiling toward the Transport Hall. If everything goes to plan, and weather permitting, the crane components will be placed on the high bay and the hole can be closed again by the middle of the week, meaning installation of the high bay permanent crane can start.

The A2T (Accelerator to Target) steel frame is complete, with just a few bracings left to fit before e´work can continue with the parapet and roof. The consoles for the Experimental Hall 2 bunker crane, weighting up to 5 tonnes each, are being welded, with the crane girder beam yet to be mounted. The NSS team will be granted access to the bunker area again late September, in order to start the installation of steel supports for the bunker structure. Concrete block installation is set to start once the bunker crane is operational (late October).

The installation of a crane beam for the Experimental Hall 2 overhead crane is ongoing, as well as MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) installations, such as in-roof ventilation piping. Steel works for will part 2 of the Beam Line Gallery will continue once the A2T steel is fully complete (within two weeks).

The Target Concrete team completed the five hatches for the Active Cells. This was the very last heavy concrete casting on the construction site – a defining moment for the project. The heavy concrete batching plant that was opened especially for the ESS project, at Sydsten’s facility in Eslöv, has now closed down. We have completed the casting of 29 out of a total 36 hatches in our hatch production area – the remaining seven hatches are for the Monolith. A test lift of all hatches will be performed by December 2020.

All Target concrete works, which includes remaining internal sealings, mainly in A2T, and casting of all hatches, will be completed by the end of this year.

Accelerator

Refill of the dog leg continues according to schedule.  Top-fill soil will be added, after which geomembrane is to be installed (mid-September).

An area next to the Dog Leg/Gallery Building is being prepared for an MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) tent, which is to be moved from its current position in the LAN area.  The large blue LAN tent about 4 metres to the west is to be moved, which will allow the creation of a pond.

General

Subcontractor Three L Technologies are busy with the installation of brackets and profiles for insulation boards to be mounted along the façades. The first insulation boards are now being installed on the back of the building. Cladding with sheet metal and aluminium panels will finish off the building’s external look.
