Accelerator buildings

The Test Stand 3 tests of the first serial-produced medium beta modulator have been successfully completed, and the modulator has been positioned in the first medium beta cell in the Klystron Gallery.

Radio Frequency power tests with a klystron is ongoing in the normal conducting part of the Gallery.

Tunnel shielding installations are underway - this week installation of steel bricks for the Front End Building penetrations shielding progressed. The steel shielding will be followed by a concrete wall. The purpose of this is to provide shielding around the penetrations in the wall behind the ion source where utilities, such as cables and pipes, are installed, making it possible to access the rack room whilst the beam is on.

The Drift Tube Linac (DTL) test team from in-kind partner INFN in Italy will be back on site in February to complete the tuning tests, before installation of the first DTL tank in the tunnel mid-March.

Experimental Halls

Whilst bunker block installation progresses inside Experimental Hall 2, the bunker area on the Experimental Hall 1 side has been made ready for ESS to start measuring and taping for the base plate installation here. The purpose of the bunker is to provide shielding for the first few metres of each instrument beamline. It comprises 4 sectors: the west and north sectors inside Experimental Hall 2, and the east and south sectors in Experimental Hall 1.

The large overhead crane for Experimental Hall 1 is subject to lift and start of installation this weekend. It has a span of 50,5 metres!

Target roof

The ESS sombrero will soon cover the entire area around the Target and Experimental Halls. Steel structure has been installed along the entire south facade of Experimental Hall 1, around D08 lab, Target Entrance, Transport Hall and around to cover half the north facade of Experimental Hall 2. Scaffolding is now in place on the east end of the Target building, above D04 lab, to facilitate the start of installation of cantilever steel for the curved roof here.

On the south side, cladding of the cantilever roof with aluminium panels continues.

Campus move

As the Campus project was recently handed over from construction partner Skanska, ESS are now preparing the big move to the new offices in March. Workshops and labs are already being fitted, and IT installations are ongoing in the three buildings.
