Accelerator

Beam commissioning begins

With a system permit and authorisation in place, on Thursday 28 October the beam commissioning activities in the normal conducting linac started. This phase of conditioning, to include proton beam from the Ion Source to the Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) section, is expected to go on until the end of the year.

Klystron Gallery

High power site acceptance tests for the DTL3 klystron, modulator and RF distribution system has been performed.

All four RF power stations are now in place in spoke cell 120a, with local power tests following.

Works in the DTL workshop, involving assembly, tuning and bead pulling for the Drift Tube Linac tanks, are ongoing.

Cryomodules testing

There are four serial-produced medium beta elliptical cryomodules on site, with another one scheduled for delivery next week. One cryomodule has already been fully tested and will go to storage, one is currently subject to RF power and cooling tests inside the test stand 2 bunker, one is in the incoming reception area in TS2 and the fourth one is in the waiting area in test stand 4, ready to go inside the test stand 2 area once a free spot is available.

Target

Port tubes

All 39 port tubes have now been delivered to ESS.

The NN bar and NBEX adapter will be delivered sand installed this coming week. The NN bar contains three port tube inserts, including one for the test beamline, the first to receive neutrons at ESS.

Active Cells

The lower and upper intrabay doors separating the process cell from the maintenance cell are in place, with electric signal installations now ongoing. A wire connection from the upper door to the drive unit assembly on the other side of the wall inside Transport Hall has been made and installation work is ongoing.

Up on high bay level, the two floor valves down to the Active Cell are in place, with electrical installations for the opening mechanism being finalised.

Cryo Moderator System

The delivery of the Cryo Moderator System (CMS) took place this week. It is currently stored inside G04 cryo compressor building, for lifting to take place during November. A large crane will be installed on the ground outside the Target building and a complex lift operation above the large roof structure into the top floor of the Accelerator to Target building will follow.

Test installation of explosion hatches will be performed prior to the lift-in of the CMS.

ESS Sombrero

Cladding for the cantilever roof is ongoing in all remaining areas: In the corner between Experimental Hall 1 and D08 lab and above the Accelerator to Target building. Joints requiring special panels remain to be completed.

Target Entrance

The Target Entrance building is ready for handover and the building has now been sealed off for the final inspection to take place. Handover to ESS is scheduled for December 2021, the same as for the rest of the remaining buildings.

Experimental Halls & Labs

Bunker cranes

The bunker crane runway reinforcement works are now completed also on the south side, inside Experimental Hall 1.

D08 RML lab

The radioactive materials lab (RML) on the ground floor of lab building D08 has been equipped and in-ceiling installations completed. Two glove boxes, currently stored in lab E04, will be moved here. These come as an in-kind contribution from the University of Tartu, Estonia.

LoKI instrument

Concrete plinths and base plates for the LOKI instrument have been installed, from the shielding bunker to the location of the scientific cave to be built inside Experimental Hall 2.

Landscaping and earthworks

This week the Skanska civil works team has planted trees and shrubs around site, completing the landscaping activities on site.
