Drift Tube Linac

Drift Tube Linac 4 has been installed in the Normal Conducting Linac.

Meanwhile in the DTL workshop, Drift Tube Linac 3 has been equipped with water manifolds and put on the transport trolley. It will be positioned in the tunnel in mid-October.

Drift Tube Linac 2 is subject to final assembly and will follow later this autumn.

The fifth and last Drift Tube Linac, DTL 5, will also be prepared for installation in the DTL workshop. This unit will only be installed after Beam Commissioning to the DTL 4 Faraday cup is completed.

Cryogenics for the linac

Leak testing of the cryogenic distribution system in the tunnel is ongoing. Once this has been proved completely leak tight, installation of cryomodules in the tunnel will start.

RF power systems

The modifications to the e-bends in the waveguide system have been completed and will be subject to testing.

High power and low power testing continue in the medium beta cells. All medium beta racks have been populated and energised.

Linac Warm Units

All 73 Linac Warm Units, prepared and pre-tested at the Lund RATS lab, have now safely arrived at ESS. The last units to arrive were lifted down to the tunnel via the HEBT loading bay and will be subject to particle-free installation on pedestals in the tunnel.

Target

Testing the Target Systems

Works to complete the installation of the Target wheel shaft and drive unit continue inside the Target Mock-Up and Test Stand.

Monolith shielding

The north grid shielding block is being equipped with pipes, with a plan to install it into the Monolith vessel within the coming week. Next up will be the lower and upper pancake cooling blocks, which will also be prepared with piping before installation.

Instruments

Optics Assembly

In the on-site integration tent, optics assembly and vacuum tests are ongoing for the five recently delivered Neutron Beam Port Inserts. FREIA, DREAM, ESTIA, VESPA and SKADI inserts will soon be ready for installation into the Monolith port tubes, starting in the north sector (LOKI and FREIA).

BIFROST

False floors for installations have been put in place inside the cave as well as by the beam entrance to the cave. Next up will be the installation of out-of-bunker neutron guides.

Common shielding

Positioning of shielding blocks for neutron beamlines is ongoing in the D03 hall and in the E02 beamline gallery. The system consists of a lower and upper shielding block. Inside each structure, neutron guides and associated equipment are to be installed.
