ESS Council appoints new Director for Operations and Machine

Camille Ginsburg

Camille Ginsburg will lead the Operations and Machine Directorate as of 1 April 2026, taking over from Kevin Jones.

Camille Ginsburg joins ESS from the U.S. Department of Energy where she has been a Programme Manager for Accelerators in the Office of High-Energy Physics, and was Deputy-Director of the Accelerator R&D and Production Office. An internationally recognised expert in accelerator physics and technology,  Dr. Ginsburg brings over 20 years of scientific, technical and leadership experience across several leading accelerator-based laboratories in Europe and the U.S.A. She will join ESS on 1 December 2025.

Dr. Ginsburg holds a PhD in Particle Physics from Northwestern University (U.S.A). She was a scientist at the Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory where she became deputy lead for the Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II), and then a scientist at Jefferson Lab, where she was the Director of Accelerator Operations, leading the team responsible for safe and high-reliability beam delivery and optimal accelerator performance.

Reflecting her standing in the accelerator community, Dr. Ginsburg has served on many review and advisory committees for research laboratories, facilities and major accelerator-based projects.

“I am delighted to join ESS at this exciting time, and very much look forward to working with the excellent ESS team to deliver neutrons for scientific advancement”, says Dr. Ginsburg.

For Helmut Schober, ESS Director-General, “It is a great pleasure to welcome Camille Ginsburg to ESS as our future Director for Operations and Machine. She joins at an exciting time for ESS, as we complete the construction phase and transition to full research operations by the end of 2027. Dr. Ginsburg’s in-depth expertise and extensive experience with large projects will be instrumental in ensuring a successful transition to producing science”.

“On behalf of the ESS Council, I am delighted to welcome Camille Ginsburg to the ESS executive team. We have every confidence that her extensive technical and leadership experience will ensure the successful completion, reliable operation, and continuous development of the ESS neutron source”, says Robert McGreevy, Chair of the ESS Council.
