2025 marked a defining year for ESS, with major milestones achieved across accelerator commissioning, instrument readiness, safety systems, data infrastructure, and international collaboration. ESS successfully reached “Beam on Dump” for the first time, accelerating protons to 800 MeV and transporting them through more than 540 metres of the accelerator tunnel, demonstrating fully integrated accelerator operations. The first neutron instruments advanced toward readiness, key personnel safety systems were completed, and the ESS Data Management and Scientific Computing Centre strengthened support for future user operations. Progress across the facility continued to be driven by strong European in-kind collaboration, bringing ESS closer to first neutrons, first science, and the start of user operations.
